First bag fees on AirTran
Some travelers will have to suck-up to additional first-bag fees of $15 when travelling with Orlando based AirTran & Delta. After Delta navigated through bankruptcy in 2007, it still seams to be struggling in a tough economy.
In a recent move to shore up debts, Delta charged passengers with a additional bag-check fee of $15. Unfortunately, AirTran imposed baggage fees one week after Delta, suggesting some collusion between the two giants.
In October, CEO Fornaro told analysts in a statement that programming was completed that would impose the fee for the first bag checked. Apparently, AirTran who operates from Jackson Hartsfield Airport was waiting on Delta to make the first move.
In a recent class action suit, anti-competitive activity has been alleged against both airlines by a law firm in Washington, D.C. The lawsuit alleges that there was a short period of time between the fee instituted by Delta and later AirTran followed suite. Representatives of AirTran argued that they are competitors with Delta in more than 2/3 of their non-stop flights. Naturally, one would mimic the other in order to stay competitive.
Both low-fair airlines provide domestic flights from Atlanta.
