Aging Citrus Bowl renovation put on hold

Instead of renovating the aging citrus bowl stadium, Orange County Commission wants to be a sports stadium with a retractable roof costing $330 million of taxpayers money.

Planners are hoping that a new stadium proposed at $175 million across from I-Drive could attract new private financing allowing the County to build a performing arts center said Bill Segal.

Some questioned his overall business plan stressing that it would be better to build a new stadium in downtown Orlando.

Officials believe that having a venue downtown benefits the community at large. Attorney Mayanne Downs believe that putting the venue on I-Drive would only benefit a smaller sector of the community.

Ambitious $1.1billion plans were made in July 2007 by county leaders to develope a football stadium, arts center, and a new $480 million Orlando Magic arena.

Ambitious $1.1billion plans were made in July 2007 by county leaders to develope a football stadium, arts center, and a new $480 million Orlando Magic arena. But due to the recent recession, tourist and property tax revenues that were counted on to pay for the plan have plummeted.

Most likely the only project on track is the arena planned for late 2010. The $425 million arts center may face at least a two-year delay, and Citrus Bowl upgrades could wait a decade or longer.
