Big Toho Airboat Rides
A trip to Orlando is just not complete without exploring Lake Tohopekaliga's everglades.
Big Toho Air Boat Rides offers a unique experience exploring uncharted waters bustling with wildlife including it's premium attraction, the native Florida gator. This is more than just a boat-ride on the swamp, but an adventure exploring secluded swamps for exotic animals in their natural habitat
Before we arrived at 1:00pm, Capt. Brent's three captains had already made 8 trips exploring Lake Tohopekaliga best kept secrets. While waiting for the next boat to depart, guests are entertained as crew-members play with a small alligator captured in the wild.
"All aboard" shouted Captain Joe as we boarded the 15 passenger air-boat. Most visitors don't realize that this lake has been untouched and is probably in the same condition during the times of our native Americans.
As he started up the airplane engine, the huge fan made a loud roar as we set sail for uncharted waters. The air-boat ride offers some of the most breathtaking scenery ever. Leaving the Lakeside marina, the adventure was about to begin.
The trip is narrated by one of four captains with over 20 years experience in the water. Our trip was hosted by Captain Joe who was both entertaining and informative. Pulling back on the throttle, the air-boat glided on the water at an average of 45 mph.
The lake is home to many wild animals including ducks, birds, snakes, and of coarse the native alligator. As the boat approached, teams of coots, a black bird with orange beak, frantically paddle their way into the air as they scattered escape the boats path. Refreshing sprays of water dash on our faces in the warm sun.
"Let's find us some gators" shouts the exuberant Capt. Joe. Captain Brent's fleet consists of 2 air-boats with capacity of 15 passengers and a 3rd boat with a capacity of 6 passengers. Depending on conditions, alligators can be disturbed very easy especially on a windy day.
As the boat entered stealth mode, it drifted directly into nests of alligators. Alligators don't labour hard to capture their prey, instead they are creatures of opportunity. Their primary food source is fish and crabs. Gators spend 80% of their time sunning themselves because they are basically cold blooded creatures.
There's one shouted the captain as he navigated the boat into for some amazing pictures. It species seemed to have it's own territory not coming near the other.
Reaching top speeds of 45 mph, the captain demonstrated his dynamic navigation skills weaving, turning, spinning and a host of other maneuvers.through saw grass and gator grass.
Not only does Big Toho Airboat Rides offer tours but group tours, gator hunting, night specials, and bass fishing. As formerly mentioned, the adventure is more than just a boat ride but is informative. On the tour, guest will view several islands of interest including Paradise and Makinson Islands. At one point, citrus was the staple crop in Florida. During it's heyday, the lake was used to transport fruit from Paradise Island to dock side of the lake. Today legislators have opened Makinson Island home to 132-acres of nature refuge for wildlife.
As we left the Alligator nests, the boat began to wind down a small water path nestled in the middle of hundreds of cypress trees growing in the water. Many fisherman love this spot for bass fishing because its quiet and secluded from the main routes.
From bass fishing to gator hunts, group gatherings to night time adventures, Big Toho Airboat Rides has it all.
At the end of the day, we were quite impressed with our adventure that began as a simple cruise around a lake but then evolved into fun-filled day with Big Toho Airboat Rides.
