Tourism bureau will come out of hiding
Commissioners for Orange county are considering how to balance the competitiveness of the Orlando County Convention & Visitors Bureau. The taxpayer-subsidized agency may soon become a public department of Orange County in the days to come.
Due to the current economic slow down, the agency feels it needs to conduct business differently going forward. Frustrated leaders who control its budget, feel taxpayers money is better justified in an entity that has a public presence.
As long as the agency is transparent, it is not very competitive but it could represent a threat to many businesses in the same market. Many have expressed their concerns regarding transparency including Walt Disney Parks and other Resort executives
Some like County Commissioner Linda Stewart would like create a taskforce charged with the objective of transforming the Convention & Visitor Bureau into a public entity said Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty.
But an agency that receives $30 million in hotel taxes annually needs to be less transparent said other county commissioners during their top priority meeting.
