The Space Mountain Experience
What is the first place that comes to your mind when you think of attractions? I know the very first thing that pops into my mind is most definitely the Walt Disney theme parks. If you have never paid a visit to any of the Walt Disney World parks, it should be on your list of things to do and see. I was lucky enough to spend an entire day at the Magic Kingdom last week and I had an absolute blast. With so many fun and exciting things to, the only problem that I found while visiting the Magic Kingdom was trying to decide what exactly I wanted to do first. I went on every ride that 8 full hours would allow, and I found one ride in particular that I fell in love with, Space Mountain.
When I arrived via the monorail from the Magic Kingdom parking to the entrance of the Magic Kingdom itself, I remember back to 1982, I believe it was, when my parents took my brothers and me to Walt Disney World for a day of talking animals, magic, pirates, flying elephants and most importantly the rides. Sure, we had a great time riding rides such as Dumbo, The Jungle Cruise and Pirates of the Caribbean, but I recall that there was one ride that I was not quite “big” enough to ride and of course that is the one ride that I wanted to ride the most, perhaps because I couldn’t ride is what made it so enticing.
As my family and I were walking towards Cinderella’s Castle, I remember that I turned my head to the right and my eyes caught a glimpse of a futuristic sign that read “Tomorrowland”, and just beyond that intriguing sign was a gigantic white building that looked like a big, pointy mound of snow. I turned to my parents and pointed at the mountain. My parents took us over to the ride and I saw that the name of this most interesting ride was Space Mountain. I, being quite the little sci-fi kid that I was, knew that if this ride had to do with space, then it was certainly a ride that I needed to go on. It didn’t help my excitement that everyone that was exiting the ride was talking about how fun and exciting that this Space Mountain was, so you could imagine my utter disappointment when I found out that I was not the proper height to ride the mountain.
Can you take a gander on what ride I made a b-line to when I went to the Magic Kingdom last week? Yep, you guessed it, Space Mountain. It was like a reenactment of the events that took place on that summer day in 1982. I walked into the park, strolled down Main Street and made my way towards Cinderella’s Castle, except this time I am not with my family and I am big enough to take on the mastadonian mountain, and in my own little personal space quest, I rode Space Mountain.
I walked through the line that started in front of the ride, right underneath the Space Mountain sign. As I stood in line, my anticipation grew. I could hear the spine-curling screams of kids and adults alike, as I stood and waited ever-so patiently for my turn on the mountain. I turned the final corner of the line and there they were, the space carts were all lined up, waiting for the next group of astronauts to man their intergalactic space vehicles and traverse through hurling asteroids fields, comets and other space related dangers.
I climbed into my seat and waited for the safety bar to lock just above the top of my thighs. We slowly moved into the launching chamber, as flashing vertical light zoomed over our heads, like hyper speed from the classic Star Trek television show. We stopped for a brief moment and them we shot out of the launching area into a series of twists, turns, inclines and declines. It was dark throughout most of the ride, so you could not see what was coming up. Would it be a sharp turn left, or right perhaps, or are we going straight up just to be dropped strait down? It was quite a sensory overload and it was amazing. The ride was just as I imagined it when I was a kid and standing in front of Space Mountain, waiting for the height verdict and listening to the big kids as they were exiting the ride, boasting about how great Space Mountain is, and I agree, it is one awesome ride. In fact it is so awesome that I rode it four times that day.
Don’t get me wrong, I think that all the rides at Walt Disney World are fantastic, so don’t hesitate to ride any of them. I am just partial to Space Mountain because I remember the big deal I made when I found out I couldn’t ride it.
Be sure to visit any of Walt Disney’s magical parks for a great time with the entire family. A lifetime of memories awaits you and your family when you visit Orlando and the Walt Disney World family of resorts and theme parks.
