Search for missing Carnival crew member

Fifty minutes into the new year, one of Carnival's crew members fell overboard from an altitude of 82 feet into the water. To date, rescue workers are still searching for the unidentified crew member.

At that critical moment, the cruise ship Carnival Sensation was about 20 miles off the coast east of Vero Beach. Although crew members threw him a life ring, the unfortunate man never resurfaced to grab the ring.

The coast guard began to frantically search for the offduty crew member before the ship docked at Port Carnival at 10:00am. Carnival Corp. is one of the largest cruise operations based new Miami's West Palm Beach.

Coast Guard deployed a plethra of assets to find the missing man including two planes, two helicopters, four rescue boats from Miami and Fort Pierce. All assets return to base less the 87 ft cutter that continued until the morning of January 2, 2009.

Searching 1,000 sq. miles of water is not an easy task especially with the currents, seven foot seas and the fact that he did not have a life preserver when he fell overboard.
