Lay off 800 Bahamas Island Resort

As the global economic crisis continues to increase, the Island Resort claims to have laid off 800 employees due to low occupancy. Many tourists appetites for exotic getaway destinations have been curbed by the declining economy.

For the countries largest employer, these cuts represent about 10% of their workforce. Reeling from sharp declines, hundreds of hotel workers have lost employment as the Atlantic archipelago economy is seeing a decline of visitors.

Covering about three quarters of the 800 acres near the capitol Nassau, Atlantis is know for its pink towers and marine habitat.

Last year, Atlantis spent about $1 million on expansion improvements.

Statistics indicate that the United States accounts for more than 80 percent of tourists to the Bahamas.
