a rental car journey, by L.D.
We set off from Kissimmee on an early Monday morning in June. The sun was rising above the palmetto palms as we drove out. The rental car we picked up from the airport seemed nice and smooth and we were well on our way to California, we got a nice deal on our Orlando Rental Car.
We didn't have an itinerary so we just headed north on the I 75. Soon we switched to the I-10 West. We expect the trip will take aprox 44 hours of driving to reach Los Angeles. Our first stop was Tallahassee, we had a quick bite to eat at Mickey D's and then we were on the road again. We ended up staying the night in Mobile AL. It took us 9 hours to drive the 503 miles and that was the end of day 1.
We all woke up early and we set off on the Interstate headed for our second stop in Houston, Texas. We had to stop for one of the well known Texas steaks, the restaurant was called the "Bulls Behind." It was a very good meal, we highly recommend the place. The drive to Houston took us about 8 hrs and about 500 miles. We had an early night and then we set off for El Paso the next day (this was another 750 miles and it took us around 11 hrs).
If you ever are driving through West Texas, you'll will find that the scenery changes, it becomes more sparse and less green. We decided to stop at Toyah. This is a small town located in a flood plain (it has been flooded a number of times). I stopped here a few years ago when I was driving my 18 wheeler across country on a dedicated route for Fed-Ex. I spoke to one of the inhabitants of the Town, his name was Pedro. He showed me photos of rattlesnakes he caught earlier that day. Pedro said he had lived there all his life. He also said he owned the garage and tire service in the town. It was the only business there. At one time there was a bar and grill in town but now it has gone. It is sad to see a town die but Toyah may come back to life, it just needs a little investment.
More on this journey later.
