New animated character debuting in China

Disney will now be promoting a new character other than its mainstay crew Mickey Mouse, Daffy Duck called “The magic Gourd.“ The storyline revolves around a young Chinese boy who discovers a Gourd which grants him several wishes. Interestingly enough, this gourd happens to be an item in a typical Chinese meal.

The featured-film is based on writer Zhang Tianyi’s novel and was adapted for Television. Disney is planning the release of this new animated character this summer and will partner with the stare-run China Film Group. Since Centro Digital Pictures produced this movie, the credits will not be given to Disney’s animators.

Disney has successfully opened the Chinese mark with its content by using an overarching approach to make inroads into the culture including 4,200 store outlets, Disney cartoons on more that 40 channels, cartoon books, and productions in China of Lion King and Disney on Ice.

Although Disney characters are relatively unknown in China, Disney has made a concerted effort in a closed Country to saturate the Chinese market with its products.
