Honorees receive red carpet treatment at Disney

Disney previously solicited names of about five hundred students from Seminole, Osceola, Polk, Lake, and Orange in recognition for their philanthropic works towards fellow man. Out of the five hundred names that were submitted, only one hundred teenagers received a red-carpet treatment on Wednesday, including a performance by Idol Diana DeGarmo, a confetti shower and a greeting from Disney characters. Several students received either Disney passes or Shining Star awards for their good deeds.

Prior to submitting these names, students had to be nominated by their own schools before they could stand before a panel of community leaders and Disney officials. Honorees were recognized for their community involvement, character, academics and community leadership.

Two students recognized for their service to needy and sick folk were Hayley Nielson a fifth-grader and Christopher Dela Cruz an eighth-grader. These were honored with a Shining Star award for going beyond the call of duty.

During the Christmas season and past six years, Hayley both delivered meals and wheels to 10 families and supplied deprived students at her school with toys and things. At one point she cut 11 inches off her blond hair to donate it to Locks for Love. She said she never regretted having to cut it off.

Volunteering for Give Kids the World was Christopher Cruz serving sick children food and spending quality time with them each month. Christopher indicated that the best part was the reaction of these small children while he was blessing them with life’s necessities.

But one teenager quickly pointed out that he enjoyed supplying the needs of others not for Disney’s recognition but because it was the right thing to do at the time.
